Meet the Podroll Atlas

I was so excited to learn about the Podroll Atlas. A few weeks ago, Alberto Betella of RSS.com posted a beautiful constellation-like image on LinkedIn and I emailed him, “I MUST KNOW MORE.” So, this article is that more ⬇️

That Remind Us How the ‘90s Raised Us

Each issue of our newsletter is curated by a different person. Learn more.

In making my podcast, I’ve had to spend a lot of time in the past lately, specifically the ’90s and early 2000s. Sometimes that’s meant revisiting some pretty heavy stuff, but other times it’s a reminder of a world before endless doomscrolling and deepfakes - when movies were in theaters, sitcoms ran 24 episode seasons, and M.A.S.H. and cootie catchers were peak entertainment.

It’s been such a fun (and occasionally emotional) walk down memory lane that I wanted to put together a list that captures that feeling packed with TV shows, movies and the little cultural moments we all shared. Have fun traveling back in time!

ONE

Everybody Knows But Me

The One With My Dad’s Confession

My love for ’90s nostalgia is deeply tied to why I needed it — escaping into sitcoms while some pretty dark things were happening in my real life. So, I made a podcast that combines both!

A true story that’s stranger than fiction, where my very f*cked up family occasionally becomes the sitcom I wish they were. Enjoy, my fellow ’90s babies.

TWO

Talk Girl

Tween Vs Adult

You had me at M.A.S.H, Talk Girl. This podcast is like stepping straight into a perfectly average Y2K day, in the best way possible! It feels like being at a sleepover with your best friends, spiraling about crushes, dream cars, and questionable fashion choices. So. much. fun!!

THREE

1999: The Podcast

Galaxy Quest

It wouldn’t be my nostalgic millennial list without my all-time favorite ’90s movie — “Galaxy Quest.”

1999: The Podcast is such a fun premise, looking back at 1999, AKA peak Y2K anxiety + wildly iconic movies. Hosts John and Julia do an amazing job unpacking the film, and they get into the genre-bending satire in a way that’s fascinating. The Thermians would be proud.

FOUR

Pod Meets World

The Pilot

Arguably my favorite podcast of all time! “Boy Meets World” defined my love of ’90s sitcoms and teen culture.

I’ve listened to every episode of the podcast, so why not start from the beginning? Beyond their incredible chemistry (they’re so clearly best friends, exactly what you want from your TGIF heroes), Danielle Fishel’s recaps are elite. I love the structure, and especially how critical they are about the show and their own work. They call out bad acting, lazy writing, and things that don’t age well in such a loving and honest way.

FIVE

Sentimental Garbage

Continental Garbage: Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

While it’s not technically a ’90s story like the rest of the list, this book and movie feel essential to the millennial experience. It gave us hot Greek men (spicy!), more America Ferrera (truly never enough), and a ride-or-die friend group, but also deeper themes like grief, body image, and power dynamics (whether it knew it or not). I love the way they break down this iconic film.

SIX

True Weird Stuff

Revisiting The Living Corpse: The Man Who Made a Career Being Buried Alive

Before modern mortuary science, being buried alive was a real and terrifying possibility. But in mid-century America, one man turned that fear into a career. Meet “Country” Bill White, aka "The Living Corpse." Country Bill spent over two years of his life underground, chasing world records across drive-in theaters and car dealerships.

This is the strange, wildly American story of a man who made a living cheating death.

📣 In Podcast The Newsletter, Lauren Passell recommends Next We Have with Gareth Reynolds…

Next We Have, Gareth Reynold’s podcast full of podcast segments, was one of my favorite new podcasts of last year, so of course it has already been cancelled. (I have weird taste, I guess. Why do you read this newsletter?)…
