Fearsome Tales for Halloween
Fearsome Tales from Fearless Women: a celebration of women-created horror podcasts
Each issue of our newsletter is curated by a different person. This week, our curator is Jeff Schmidt.
While horror is often seen as male-dominated, women have shaped the genre since well before even Frankenstein. It shouldn’t be surprising to learn that women have unique perspectives on fear and often use horror to explore the subversive and taboo themes about society and women's place in it. While this shows up most commonly in true crime, women are also creating and running outstanding horror fiction stories. Here’s a few that have inspired me.
AFFLICTED
Dig
Created by Tonia Ransom, Afflicted is a full-cast horror audio drama set in a small East Texas town that gets hit by disasters caused by a demonic book bound in human flesh. The answer… hoodoo.
I love that it's grounded in Southern Black folk magic. I later learned Tonia pulled on her own lived experience to create this story. It features inspiring performance and sound design.
HELLHOUND COUNTRY
FAIRBANKS
Created by Alexandra Segel, this supernatural horror/ thriller is full of twists and turns and heart. It's a story of a grieving mother, Isabel, and her daughter, Kaya, who must unravel their family’s dark secrets while caught in the crossfire of ruthless factions of monsters and men as they escape into in the deadly wilderness.
This first episode was a semi-finalist in the 2023 Austin Film Festival.

PARTIAL VEIL
HOWL
Partial Veil is a fantastic eldritch horror series created, written, and produced by Allison Cossitt.
The series also includes standalone story episodes — I'm sharing one which is so moving, it had me in tears. Yes, horror can give you the feels. “HOWL” is about Terra, a woman escaping her abusive husband, who finds safety with a wild wolf, shape-shifter Elektra, in a forbidden forest, where she'll be forced to finally confront her abuser and claim power to break free.
LIARS & LEECHES
Unpacked and Stored Away
Created by Marisa Ewing, this it's a supernatural horror story about grief and resilience. Tonya is devastated after her sister and brothers are killed in a random shooting, and becomes consumed with anxiety and panic attacks. She moves in to her late sister's home and realized something has followed her there.
Tonya is joined by friends and others to figure out what is going on before it claims her too. It's creepy and deals with some heavy issues, so heed the content warnings.
OMINOUS THRILL
HER HORRORWEEN
Ominous Thrill is my full cast horror/thriller audio drama which centers female protagonists and feminist themes. I just launched a new season titled "Her Horrorween," featuring 15 stories written by women.
Each episode is a standalone story and explores what horror can mean when women are it's subject and it's author. This is wonderfully diverse collection of feminist horror, spanning literary horror, dark comedy, body horror, folk horror, and more.
Killer Marketing
Killer Marketing explores the true crime stories behind everyday products, from the Tylenol murders that changed medicine packaging to the poisoned Halloween candy myth that terrified parents.
Hosted by Emily Rask of Lies We Bought, each episode uncovers how crime, scandal, and public panic changed the way companies market to us today.
This is our 6th episode slot. Apply to be featured here.

👩💻 In this week’s issue of Podcast the Newsletter, Lauren Passell recommends The Vardø Witch Trials She writes:
The Vardø Witch Trials tells an important and timely untold story that’s giving something to these women, 400 years later, that the courts never did—the benefit of the doubt. It’s also atmospheric and deeply researched and just plain spooky.
