5 LGBTQ+ History Podcast Recommendations
Each issue of our newsletter is curated by a different person. David Boyer put together this one.
Did you know that October is LGBTQ+ History Month? Well, it is. And you're in luck. There are some amazing shows out there, so you can binge your way through queer history.
Making Gay History
The OG queer history podcast has created a season that digs into the experiences of LGBTQ people in the lead up to World War II and the Holocaust. Sadly, it's timely.
When We All Get to Heaven
Cassette tapes discovered under the floorboards of a gay church in San Francisco that shed light on how the AIDS epidemic impacted the church and the city in the early years of the epidemic.
I'm a completist: start at the beginning!
Bad Gays
Want to learn about how the ideal of gay masculinity ended up looking like hunky sailor? Bad Gays has the answer with this deep dive into Tom of Finland (there's also a recent episode about the ups and downs of Liza Minnelli that you may want to check out).
Queer Serial
Episode 01 of a 09 episode serial that tries to make sense of a gay panic spread through Boise, Idaho in 1955. Local officials claimed a predatory ring of homosexuals had corrupted hundreds of teenage boys. Fifteen men ended up in jail, including one man who was sentenced to life in prison.
Revisiting The Gay Life
This limited series about a gay radio show that explores a pivotal moment in queer history: the time between the death of Harvey Milk and the onset of what became the AIDS epidemic. The first episode goes even further back to the dawn of gay radio in 1958.
Yes, I made it with KALW Public Media and the GLBT Historical Society, but it draws on an archive of more than 200 radio episodes from the 1970s and early 1980s that tell the story of the era. In real time.
More from this issue’s curator
The EarBuds team asked David: “Do you remember how you discovered one or more of the podcasts you've included?”
At Third Coast in 2014 I met the executive producer of Making Gay History, Sara Burningham, who said, "Have I got a show for you?" As always, she was right.
The series is a touchstone and a revelation and I cannot imagine my sonic life without it.

Why would someone decide to risk their life for a country that is not their own? What might they be searching for?
Call Sign Condor is a podcast about the thousands of Latin American soldiers who are fighting in Ukraine — for Ukraine. Through the stories of our protagonist, Condor, and his fellow soldiers, this four-part series takes us inside the lives of Latin American men and women who’ve been fighting — some of them for years — in the war in Ukraine.
