More Than a Stereotype: Podcasts Celebrating Latine Heritage Month

Why did you choose this theme?

Latine Heritage Month (pronounced: La-tee-neh) is a perfect time to dismantle the stereotypes that underscore the Latine experience in America. We're illustrating not only contributions made by Latine people, but also the rich tapestry of culture, thought, and experiences. We also feel it's important that we use this time to go beyond the basic knowledge that non-Latine people have about Latine culture. We want this listening experience to provoke thought and curiosity, rather than propagating stereotypes or superficial understandings of culture.

The Pulso PodcastIs work-life balance a privilege for Latinos?

MORE THAN A HARD WORKERLatinos are associated with all kinds of stereotypes. We like big parties, are great dancers, and have a drawer dedicated to all the ketchup packets we've accumulated over the years. Some of these are harmless, but there's this one stereotype worth questioning: "Latinos work hard." Where does this stereotype come from and is it actually causing more harm than good in our communities?

Anything for SelenaBig Butt PoliticsMORE THAN A SEXUAL OBJECTI mean, talk about a podcast episode that brings us chills. I think Selena is the first pop star who brought Latine people together, regardless of their native country. Nearly 30 years ago, Sir-Mix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back (I Like Big Butts)” hit the airwaves to the delight and shock of listeners. Today, the obsession with big butts is still strong with idols like Cardi B and Beyonce. It has also permeated white culture, with Kim Kardashian “breaking the internet” and butt selfie queen Jen Selter. Host, Maria, uncovers that booty politics is ultimately about race and brings us to a long overdue conversation about anti-blackness within the Latine community.

Con Todo Presents: Brown Love PodcastMachismo MindsetsMORE THAN A MACHO MANThough not currently updated, Afro-Latina Host Dascha Polanco sits down with JJ Soria (Gentefied) and Julio Macias (On My Block) and they dig deep into a vulnerable conversation about machismo within the Latino community. Did they experience it growing up? Has it shaped the way they live and love in 2020? Come for a candid conversation about gender roles, stay to learn how a prostate cancer scare can turn into a love story.

Latinas From The Block To The BoardroomNoelle Silver, AI Executive and Founder of AI Leadership Institute Shares Her Vision For Design Justice And Ethical AIMORE THAN A STATISTIC

We love this episode because Noelle was thought of as a statistic. One of her high school teachers actually told her not to go to college and that she would be better suited for a retail job. No shade for retail workers, but Noelle had a different vision for herself and went after it. Her story underscores how people of color can be judged as "unsuitable" for tech or other corporate roles and intentionally guided into careers that do not allow them to achieve their full potential.

How to Talk to [Mamí & Papí about AnythingUnlearning Mamí’s Lessons for Professional SuccessMORE THAN A MODEL MINORITY

This episode is so compelling because Pabel describes the pressure he felt, both from family and the workplace, to assimilate in order to have a successful career and how he chooses to navigate the corporate world without compromising his identity
