Curator:

Why did you choose this theme?

As an ex-neuroscientist turned true crime podcaster, Ben is curious about the real science and stats about crime. Crimes are often sensationalized and crime podcasts are sometimes only loosely researched and fact-checked. But if we examine crime carefully, we can uncover pressing issues in our society and ways we might address them.

AlgorithmAfrikka Didn't Need to Die

From our curator's podcast, comes the story of Thomas Hargrove, a data journalist. After coming across an FBI database with information about every homicide in the US, he decided to try and create an algorithm that would detect patterns within the data -- and identify serial killers that had gone undetected by the police. He warned the city of Gary, Indiana that they might have a serial killer on the loose, but they ignored him... until four years later they arrested a man who confessed to an almost identical set of crimes.

Science VsSerial Killers: Science of the LambsOur curator calls this podcast, "One of the most entertaining and carefully researched science podcasts out there." Science Vs has covered a number of topics that might fall outside the traditional purview of a science show, including serial killers, police shootings, and more.

Bear BrookHide and SeekA great true crime podcast from New Hampshire Public Radio that centers around the development of a new forensic technique -- forensic genealogy -- and how it was used to catch a killer.

Probable CausationAnna Harvey on reducing racial disparities in crime victimization

An interview podcast that sits down with academics talking about the intersection of law, economics, and crime. This episode particularly focused on how methods from social science can be used to study how policies influence outcomes like crime rates.

Talking ResearchDr. Rachel Lovell: Rape Kits & Serial Rapists

This was a podcast Ben listened to as he did research for Algorithm. Another chat/interview show between academics, this one focuses specifically on research into sexual violence and features academics and researchers from many disciplines.
