Queens From History Who Made The Mark

Five podcast episodes on a theme, each week curated by a different person

Happy 2023! I LOVE when the first of the year lands on an EarBuds email day. It gives me a chance to do what I love right at the start of a new year...recommend podcasts!Next month, EarBuds will turn six! Time flies. I'll share more information soon about how we'll celebrate (spoiler: you're invited). For now, take a scroll on through this week's recommendations. We're starting the year off with some games! We're also introducing a new section in partnership with Realm Media — a fiction podcast pairing. Each week, they'll handpick a fiction podcast to go along with our EarBuds theme. Happy listening!— Arielle Nissenblatt, EarBuds founder

Why did you choose this theme?

Queen Elizabeth II was *almost* the longest ruling monarch in European history, and certainly the longest female monarch. She will be a staple in history for sure. But with her passing, you may be thinking, "who were some other women who ruled and made their mark?" We've got a list for you!

Ancient History FangirlBoudicca Part 1: The Seeds of RebellionDo you know the name Boudica? If not, get ready for the story of ultimate revenge. An ancient celtic queen is wronged by mighty Rome. She, along with a wild army she raised, decide they aren't going to take it any more and almost end Roman occupation in Brittian. Ancient History Fangirl tell this story with passion and humor and it's an absolute delight.

Drinks With Great Minds In HistoryGreat Mind #15 - Catherine de MediciIf you've seen Starz new show, The Serpent Queen (or watched the binge-able, cringe-able CW show Reign) you likely have heard the name Catherine de Medici before. But does she really deserve all that bad hype? Short answer? Maybe. She's a hugely complicated character and Zach from Drinks With Great Minds in History tells her nuanced story through thoughtful storytelling, which this much maligned character from history really deserves.

Noble Blood

Not all queens are born into it. Some have to seize power on their own and that's exactly what Catherine the Great did. The princess, formerly known as Sophie, took calculated risks and it paid off  no thanks to her dud of a husband. This story has so many twists and turns, and Dana from Noble Blood navigates it so well.Warning: You'll be hooked on Noble Blood after this episode.

Ridiculous RomanceAmina, The Nigerian Warrior QueenAmina, the legendary queen of Zazzau (modern-day Nigeria), was not one to be messed with. She led armies into battle and her name brought fear into the hearts of her enemies. So, yeah. She's pretty exciting. She also had some... interesting habits when it came to her love life. In this episode, the power-couple hosts made me laugh and cringe discussing her bedroom antics.

Queens PodcastEleanor of Aquitaine, Part 1This story has everything. Political scandal, love, hate, sex, murder... seriously everything! Eleanor of Aquitaine's story is a long one but there is never a dull moment. She set the stage for so many women to go forth and make waves of their own. Paired with a cocktail (of course), this wild story was so, so much fun to tell.
