Precedented Times

Podcast Recommendations: Precedented Times

Curator:

Newt Schottelkotte

Why did you choose this theme?

If I hear the phrase "In these unprecedented times" one more time, I swear I'll scream. These episodes are my personal picks from a group of amazing historical fiction audio dramas (so listen from the beginning!), each with their own twist on times and places that are at least a little, well, precedented. Let's take it back to the "Way Way Before Times"; these podcasts won't help you pass a history test, but you'll sure be entertained.

Lady LucyTower PrisonEarBuds curator Newt Schottelkotte loves stories about messy, complicated people. Newt says that Lady Lucy is all that and a bundle of excitement. This audio drama was inspired by Shakespeare's "Dark Lady" sonnets. The creative team behind this podcast holds a clear love for not just Shakespeare himself, but for the blend of stories and genres that made each of his works so immortal.

ars ParadoxicaMidnight

ars Paradoxica was the show that made EarBuds curator Newt realize how incredible sound design could be. Newt says that this episode is the perfect example of Mischa Stanton (the creator of this podcast) "laying down the freaking gauntlet" in sound design. This podcast tells the sci-fi adventure of a character named Sally Grissom. The story more than deserves the title of "epic," especially if you love it when a complex, intricate web of interlocking stories come together perfectly.

RADIO: OutcastThe Stolen Dandy and Five Other Titles

This fantasy-western follows an unexpected adventure across the American West. Gunsmoke, disco lights, and three iconic main characters make this show a wildly original "fish-out-of-time" concept that you've got to listen to in order to understand the hype.

The Vanishing ActThe Christmas GooseThe Vanishing Act is globetrotting farce about a German magic enthusiast, an American conman in Paris, an unfortunately-named engineer, a disappearing French magician, and a duck. Balancing morally technicolor comedy and a tight-knit plot is reason enough for applause, but the sprinkle of genuine heart is what has made this show the only thing EarBuds curator Newt can talk about these days.

Within the WiresTate Modern (1971)

The twist of an all-audio story being told through tours of an art gallery is too delicious not to appreciate. Hearing the details and lore of this very different post World War 1 world at the behest of a deeply personal and heartbreaking story is an excellent way to keep the listener both invested and hungry for more.

📰Lauren Passell's 'Podcast The Newsletter': FeMANism is “a feminist podcast for men, by men, for women” that takes you into the world of Sam Martin and Jamie Hoggart who “believe” themselves (it’s a total comedy) to be feminists, but in trying to make “feminism less annoying,” they illustrate a version of it that is feminism’s anthesis.

🚔Atlanta Monster: This breakout hit podcast explored and helped renew interest in the 29 cases of Atlanta’s missing and murdered children, known as the "Atlanta Child Murders." Soon after this podcast's release in 2018, the city of Atlanta announced that, 40 years after the events, it would be re-examining evidence in these cases. Tenderfoot TV’s Donald Albright then scaled “Atlanta Monster” into the “Monster” franchise, launching other investigative hits throughout 2019-2020, including “Monster: The Zodiac Killer” and “Monster: DC Sniper.”🎙️Podcast discoverability is the hot topic at March's MIC's Podcast Club and EarBuds founder Arielle Nissenblatt is joining them next week to talk easy-win podcast marketing tactics! MIC is a community of podcasters that meets monthly online and helps each other make brilliant podcasts.
