Precedented Times

🕒Precedented Times: Podcast Recommendations

Curator:

Newt Schottelkotte

Why did you choose this theme?

If I hear the phrase, "In these unprecedented times" one more time, I swear I'll scream. These episodes are my personal picks from a group of amazing historical fiction audio dramas (so listen from the beginning!), each with its own twist on times and places that are at least a little... precedented. Let's take it back to the "way way before-times"; these podcasts won't help you pass a history test, but you'll sure be entertained.

Lady LucyTower PrisonEarBuds curator Newt Schottelkotte loves stories about messy, complicated people. Lady Lucy is all that and a bundle of excitement. This audio drama was inspired by Shakespeare's "Dark Lady" sonnets. The creative team behind this podcast holds a clear love not only for Shakespeare himself, but for the blend of stories and genres that made each of his works so immortal.

ars PARADOXICAMidnight

ars PARADOXICA creator Mischa Stanton's skills as a sound designer made EarBuds curator Newt really appreciate how incredible sound design could be for the first time. This podcast tells the sci-fi adventure of a character named Sally Grissom and perfectly weaves together a complex, intricate web of interlocking stories.

RADIO: OutcastThe Stolen Dandy and Five Other Titles

This fantasy-Western follows an unexpected adventure across the American West. Gun smoke, disco lights, and three iconic main characters make this show a wildly original "fish-out-of-time" concept that you've got to listen to in order to understand the hype.

The Vanishing ActThe Christmas GooseThe Vanishing Act is globetrotting farce about a German magic enthusiast, an American con-man in Paris, an unfortunately-named engineer, a disappearing French magician, and a duck. This episode balances comedy and plot, but the sprinkle of genuine heart is what makes this show the only thing EarBuds curator Newt can talk about these days.

Within the WiresTate Modern (1971)

The twist of an all-audio story being told through tours of an art gallery is too delicious not to appreciate. Hearing the details and lore of this very different post-World War I world at the behest of a deeply personal and heartbreaking story is an excellent way to keep the listener invested and hungry for more.
