Why this theme?
👉🏽Women are often overlooked in history. These highlighted episodes tell stories of women that were passed over, or of women who might have even been discounted during their lives, simply for the fact they were women. Their stories deserve to be told.
Podcast Picks
Vulgar HistoryCaroline of Brunswick was married to George IV of England. He tried to discount her but Caroline wouldn't be ignored — she rebelled in every (small) way she could. |
You’re Wrong AboutThis episode discusses a search for 'the most normal girl' in Cleveland that took place in 1945. It discusses what the parameters of being a 'normal girl' were in 1945, how those parameters were decided, and what the ramifications of trying to be a 'normal girl' were back in 1945, and still are today. |
Noble BloodThis episode tells the story of a woman who went against the norms for women of her time — specifically royal women — and was imprisoned for it. Eleanor's story isn't the happiest, but it's important to hear all aspects of history so that we can put things into context, and so that we don't repeat mistakes. |
Crimes of the CenturiesWhile the story of Elizabeth Bathory, known to history as The Blood Countess, might be better known than the women in the previous episodes, this episode talks about how the story we know of Elizabeth is most likely incorrect. She is remembered in history as an evil person — a woman who killed many, and possibly even bathed in their blood. But it’s more likely that Elizabeth was a rich, powerful widow, and the easiest way to get her out of the way was to lie about her committing terrible crimes so society would have a reason to lock her away. |
Door KeyThis episode discusses women in history and how often their roles, even down to speeches they've given, are often overlooked. Most important speeches from history that are highlighted today were given by men. While they might be great speeches, we need to highlight historical speeches given by women too. |
