Podcasts for a Refreshing Take on Sustainability

Podcasts for a Refreshing Take on Sustainability

Five episodes on a theme, each week curated by a different person

Curator:

Daniel Stern

Why did you choose this theme?

Berlin, Germany has an amazing and diverse podcasting community. Our numbers have grown immensely, especially in the last few years. To celebrate that achievement I founded PodFest Berlin, and these are a few of the podcasts that will be recording at our festival.

Flicks 'n' ScoopsDie Hard with Basti KnightFlicks 'n' Scoops' host Ash loves ice cream and movies and somehow combined them into one podcast. The conversations are great, bouncing back and forth between these two topics, and then off in other directions. From the first episode I heard I wanted so badly to be a guest on this show!

Beyond AsianStories of the Third CultureThis was one of the podcasts I discovered through founding PodFest Berlin and it totally blew me away. In this episode host Sen Zhan does an amazing job of making an intensely personal conversation with her guest Holly feel relatable and universal. Trigger warning: suicidal ideation, trauma, abandonment.

Radio SpaetkaufHow to F#€K Up An Airport “Without A Plan” This is one of mine, but I have to give all the credit for it’s success to my cohosts who did an amazing job researching, writing and editing this spin-off series. These episodes keep getting downloads years later, which is a huge compliment for a news show.

Common GroundEpisode 21: Time to Reboot – Germany’s Rocky Road To The Digital Age

From our curator: I got to know host Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson’s voice through her reporting for NPR and I am so glad that she has embraced podcasting. The show has a radio feel I love; Soraya and producer Dina Elsayed book knowledgeable guests, create great conversations and apply high quality production. This episode is from lockdown so is done via zoom but I think it shows a side of Germany that would surprise people who don’t live here.

FrauenQuote #64 Tee nach TĂĽrkei, Tabak nach Dubai

Earbuds mostly focusses podcasts in English but PodFest Berlin is a multilingual festival, so I wanted to include a German language podcast as well. Frauenquote features two hilarious and good natured comedians Kinan Al and Filiz Tasdan. I met both of them through stand up comedy but the podcast gave me a chance to get to know them again. Even if you don’t speak any German you’ll understand how warm and effortlessly funny their conversations are. Also, if your German is mediocre (like mine), give it a listen.
