Why did you choose this theme?

Despite not being a big sports fan, I'm a *huge* Olympics fan –– especially the summer games. Every four years I drop everything and become obsessed with all the events, from synchronized diving to the high jump to skateboarding (which is actually now an Olympic sport!). With the Tokyo Olympics starting, here are five must-listen-to podcasts to scratch the sports itch you'll surely be feeling once the summer games begin.

The Blind Landing

Episode 1I've spent the past two years making a podcast miniseries called Blind Landing, the untold true story about one of the biggest mistakes in Olympic history. The five-episode miniseries details the ripple effect of how just two inches came to derail the 2000 women’s gymnastics all-around final and led to injured gymnasts and hotly contested results. The show features never-before-told stories and original interviews with Olympians, as well as with Olympic officials, coaches and other experts.

30 For 30 PodcastThe Trials of Dan and DaveESPN's brilliant show, 30 For 30, is so good that even people who don't follow sports will be totally sold on this series. (Ok, sold, because what is sports?!) The first episode of the podcast, The Trials of Dan and Dave, still holds up as one of their best ever. It tells the interweaving stories of two star decathletes and how the gigantic media campaign around them came crumbling down in the lead up to the 1992 Olympics.

The NarrativeKnuckle UpThis episode of Sports Illustrated's podcast does a deep dive into the art of bare-knuckling boxing –– which may not sound like the kind of thing you'd associate the word "art" with! But the history and journey of the sport is utterly fascinating, as you'll hear in this episode.

Fresh AirHow Taking A Stand For Justice Can Threaten The Careers Of Black Athletes

Journalist Howard Bryant discusses the history of social protest among African-American athletes, unpacking the perceptions we have of certain athletes and how they differ from reality.

This American LifeSomething Only I Can See

In this episode, David Epstein tells the story of how Jill Viles, who has muscular dystrophy and can’t walk, believed she had the same condition as one of the best hurdlers in the world, Priscilla Lopes-Schliep, and was determined to prove it.
