Why did you choose this theme?

My favorite podcasts make me rethink the dominant narratives we’re used to hearing about music. So many of the stories music lovers have accepted as fact are really subjective narratives concocted over time, often leaving out minority groups while lionizing those considered acceptable to the mainstream.I love podcasts that go against this practice, exposing controversial moments and diving into lesser-told histories and behind-the-scenes moments.

Shattering GleamMusical Shape-Shifting: The Many Pitches of Prince

Host Sasha Geffen’s endless musical knowledge carries listeners past the stories they’ve been fed and into the contradictions and nuances of true self-expression through the lens of gender and sexuality. The first episode is all about Prince and how he liked to create characters in his music. His recording engineer in the 80s, guest Susan Rogers is a rare first-hand witness

Object of SoundPlaylists for our Future Selves (feat. Moses Sumney)To introduce each episode, Hanif Abdurraqib promises to guide listeners toward “a deeper way of listening,” and he does this throughout the series with exceptional guests, encyclopedic music knowledge, and tasteful song clips. Playlisting is something everyone I know does, yet it’s a concept that I haven’t heard many people sit down and discuss in a legitimate way. I love the way Hanif uses it as a jumping off point for Moses Sumney to discuss how he creates his own music.

Switched on PopThe Women Reclaiming Nu-Metal ft. Rina Sawayama

Hosts Charlie Harding and Nate Sloan make deep musical analysis accessible for anyone. They talk to incredible artists about the ins and outs of their music, from music theory to its cultural context. I love this episode because conversations around nu-metal tend to lean straight, white and male, and for this episode the hosts chose to interview a pansexual, Asian, female artist, the incredible Rina Sawayama, about the genre and her music.

Dolly Parton's AmericaThe Only One For Me, JoleneI did not fully appreciate Dolly Parton for the complex cultural and musical figure she is until I listened to this podcast. I love this episode in particular because a college professor schools the hosts on homoeroticism in the song Jolene. She writes her own original verse, which the hosts play for Dolly herself – who then reveals the true story behind Jolene.

1619The Birth of American MusicThe 1619 podcast out of The New York Times’ 1619 Project highlights slavery’s consequences and centers the contributions and stories of black Americans, and this episode looks at American popular music’s reliance on “borrowing” black music, music that Wesley Morris describes as the ultimate expression of artistic freedom. I love the way the episode weaves between Morris’s voiceover and music and the creative sound design, all of which result in a really beautifully sounding and important audio exposé on where mainstream music really comes from.
