A good cry

A Good Cry

Five episodes on a theme, each week curated by a different person

Curator:

Laurel Morales

Why did you choose this theme?

Consciously or not, a good cry is often what I'm looking for in a podcast. I'm searching for some sort of catharsis. I love a good story that makes me both laugh and cry.

Good GriefPaula — “The center of our universe is gone”

Good Grief delivers on its promise. It makes me appreciate the living, have more compassion for the grieving, as well as help me deal with loss. The lovely sound design carries listeners through non narrated remembrances from people honoring those they love and dealing with the complexities of their loss.

The Turning: The Sisters Who LeftNo Turning Back

I just binged this series about Mother Theresa's Missionaries of Charity. There's mystery, intrigue in this seemingly well known icon, as well as a captivating love story. You can hear the pain in the women's voices. Their experiences clearly still affect them today.

No Feeling is FinalHi, My Name is HONOR

I love how Honor Eastly suggests listeners do something nice for themselves after listening because the show has a tendency to bring up feelings. This six-episode podcast full of audio diaries, dark humor, existential epiphanies, heartbreaking truths, and hope made me laugh and cry and sometimes both at the same time.

StorycorpsFrom One Essential Worker to Another

One of the greatest things about podcasts is access to people we don't typically hear. Before people were outfitting their closets with microphones and laptops, there were silver airstreams that traveled the country encouraging people to record their family stories. I've been listening to Storycorps since I was an All Things Considered host for KNAU years ago. Coming out of a Storycorps story into the break to read the underwriting copy I'd be weeping or blowing my nose and saying, "damn that David Isay, gets me every time." The Flagstaff station partnered with Storycorps to produce local stories one summer. I volunteered to help produce them, which meant I was signing up for therapy really. They booted up the podcast right before the pandemic started. God knows we needed some catharsis during lockdown.

2 Lives

Poet Therese Estacion Survives Rare Infection

Depending on the day all of the "2 Lives" episodes will make me cry. Therese Estacion survived a rare infection that nearly killed her, but not without sacrifice. Seriously, where are the tissues?
