Why did you choose this theme? 

I recently released a podcast about divorce within my family and was struck by how many people reached out to share their own stories of their own families. The response gave me a little inkling of a vast community -- the children, friends, partners, and parents who surround every troubled relationship, and who also have to make sense of what that relationship means for themselves.

Forever is a Long TimePart One: My Parents, Ellen and TomI’ll start with my story because it’s where my interest in this subject begins. I interviewed my parents separately about their divorce, and, not surprisingly, got somewhat different stories. What surprised me most, however, is how their own childhood experiences of divorce and marital strife loomed in the background the whole time.

This American LifeThe Sanctity of Marriage | Act Three: I Want To Be a StatisticWhen I heard this piece by Starlee Kine, I felt an immediate affinity for her probing attitude and willingness to lean into her father’s demurral and discomfort. When it’s your own parents you're interviewing, I say go for it. The details are bizarre and fascinating of course, yet like so many divorce sagas, entirely relatable.

AppearancesA Person Who Has Never Even Been Married Fantasizes Incessantly About DivorceBesides being one of my favorite podcasts of the last few years, Sharon Mashihi’s "Appearances" digs at many of the same questions about family and commitment that have buzzed around in my own mind. The main character lays it outright at the top of this episode when describing her mother: “As long as she is inadequately loved, then I as her loyal daughter should also be inadequately loved.” 

Modern LoveThe Upside of Our Parents' Divorce

I’ve always taken my close relationship with my brother for granted but realized in recent years just how special, rare, and unpredictable that kind of connection is. Perhaps our parents’ split had a little something to do with it. Here is a story in which a messy divorce becomes the foundation of a lifelong bond between siblings.

Love LettersHow to Step-Mom

If nothing else, this one is worth a listen for the first three minutes alone, in which host Meredith Goldstein and her sister riff on Mary Poppins. But beyond that, it brings us inside the experience of an oft-maligned, divorce-adjacent figure: the step-parent. Also, shoutout to my own step-parents JP and Suzanne -- love you guys!
