Dismantling Diet Culture & Fatphobia

Curated by...

Leah Carey (she/her)

Why did you choose this theme? For 43 years, I HATED my “fat, ugly, and totally unlovable” body.In 2017 I discovered that my body is actually completely average (at size 14, I can shop in the “straight sizes” of any department store). The problem wasn’t the size or shape of my body, it was that I lived with intense fatphobia. Ever since, I’ve been learning how weight stigma invades every aspect of our lives. These podcasts and their hosts have been instrumental in my examination of anti-fat bias and working to be an ally to people who experience actual discrimination based on their size.

Maintenance PhaseThe Body Mass Index

Hosts Michael Hobbes and Aubrey Gordon break down the junk science history of the Body Mass Index (BMI). Beginning with classist, sexist, and racist assumptions, the BMI was never meant to measure individuals, and today it is widely used to pad corporate profit margins.

For even more about the fallacies we've been sold about health and weight, queue up their episodes "The Trouble With Calories" and "Is Being Fat Bad For You?"

Much of the body acceptance movement has centered on women's bodies and experiences; it's long overdue to have this entry from the male perspective.

Good Girls Talk About SexI have panic attacks during oral sexFrom EarBuds curator Leah Carey, Good Girls Talk About Sex focuses on the sexual experiences of people who were brought up to be “good girls.”In this episode, Savy, a woman who self-identifies as “Infinifat,” talks about embracing her sexuality and getting more comfortable with her genitals. Leah talks with her about how to hire a sex worker because, like many women, Savy has been so focused on pleasing her partners that she hasn’t ever focused on experiencing her own pleasure.

Life After DietsBut I Feel Shocked When I See Photos of MyselfIntuitive eating coach Stefanie Michele and psychotherapist Sarah Dosanjh talk about all things related to disordered eating, bad body image, and creating a life that's free from food oppression and body obsession. In this episode, rejecting weight stigma isn’t a one-and-done proposition. No matter how much work you do on improving your body image, there will still be times when seeing yourself in a photo or the mirror can send you down a rabbit hole.
