Why did you choose this theme?

On June 19, 1865, enslaved African Americans in Texas were told they were free,

officially bringing an end to slavery in the U.S. after the Civil War.Two years ago, Juneteenth was made into a federal holiday, officially commemorating a day that has been celebrated by Black Americans for generations. These selections highlight Black creators and stories in audio and podcasting.

The Ancestors

Host Tonya Mosley is exploring territory that feels dangerous with her new season of Truth be Told. Are we as Black men and women able to openly discuss psychedelics? Or is that not a conversation we're invited to? Tonya doesn't care, she's going there.

Slow BurnNo JusticeAmong the earliest memories of EarBuds curator Justin are scenes of the L.A. Uprising flashing across the TV and the destruction it, and later the Northridge Earthquake left in their wake. Still, nothing animates the era more to him than Pac's lyrics in "Hellrazor": "Dear Lord if ya hear me, tell me why / Little girl like Latasha, had to die / She never got to see the bullet / just heard the shot / Her little body couldn't take it / it took and dropped."RIP Latasha Harlins. We all should know her story.

The Plot Thickens

Pam Grier, who hosts this podcast, follows EarBuds curator Justin on Twitter. It's been years since that happened.. and she follows a lot of people... but Justin has never gotten over it.

She's Coffy. Foxy Brown. Jackie Brown. Who else is that cool!? Curator Justin didn't know about Pam's early days much. This episode of

The Plot Thickens

revealed a lot.

Larry Wilmore: Black on the AirTracee Ellis Ross on 'I Am America"Host Larry Wilmore was a writer on some of EarBuds curator Justin's favorite TV shows of all time. Tracy Ellis Ross was the lead in one of Justin's favorite shows of all time (Girlfriends). What could be better than hearing them come together?
