Object of SoundPlaylists for our Future Selves (feat. Moses Sumney)To introduce each episode, Hanif Abdurraqib promises to guide listeners toward “a deeper way of listening,” and he does this throughout the series with exceptional guests, encyclopedic music knowledge, and tasteful song clips. Playlisting is something everyone I know does, yet it’s a concept that I haven’t heard many people sit down and discuss in a legitimate way.
Switched on PopThe Women Reclaiming Nu-Metal ft. Rina Sawayama
I love this episode because conversations around nu-metal tend to lean straight, white, and male, and for this episode, the hosts chose to interview a pansexual, Asian, female artist -- the incredible Rina Sawayama -- about the genre and her music.
Dolly Parton's AmericaThe Only One For Me, JoleneI did not fully appreciate Dolly Parton for the complex cultural and musical figure she is until I listened to this podcast. I love this episode in particular because a college professor schools the hosts on homoeroticism in the song Jolene.
1619The Birth of American MusicThe 1619 podcast out of The New York Times’ 1619 Project highlights slavery’s consequences and centers the contributions and stories of Black Americans. This episode looks at American popular music’s reliance on “borrowing” Black music, music that Wesley Morris describes as the ultimate expression of artistic freedom
