This Week's Theme: Blackberry The Masses

5 podcast episodes according to a theme, curated by a different person each week

WHY THIS THEME?: I want to empower people to challenge what they know about American history. And I believe that challenging starts with listening to how much more to the story there really is.

  CURATOR: Joshua Moore

EPISODES:

Seizing Freedom A Powerful Black Hand 56 minutes  Seizing Freedom shares the epic stories of Black people who fought for their liberty and transformed America after the Civil War. This is a narrated docu-drama about the failures and successes of the Reconstruction era, told by those who made it happen.

The Promise The Nashville Way 45 minutes

An immersive series from Nashville Public Radio about inequality and the people trying to rise above it, with host and reporter Meribah Knight. In Season 1, we hear the story of Nashville's largest public housing complex. In Season 2, we explore how that divide reveals itself in the classroom.

    Being Seen Futures 36 minutes

Being Seen is an in-depth exploration of culture’s role in resolving the tension between how we are seen and how we see ourselves. Focused on the gay and queer Black male experience, the first season of Being Seen is a space to explore these questions through conversations with leading artists, writers, activists, entertainers, and community leaders.

Versify Freedom Summer: Pitfalls, Prison Terms, and Conquests 59 minutes  Versify is part storytelling and part poetry. It begins by sending our team of poets out into neighborhoods and to community events, where we invite people to share a story from their life.

PROMO: I'm obsessed with the new collection of poetry "Negotiations" by poet Destiny Birdsong. A stunning love letter to Black women, and a simmering indictment of easy "truth."

Podcast Spotlight:

I'm a huge fan of pop culture and movies in particular, but it's rare to find a podcast that approaches the medium from a different perspective. The "Why Are Dads" team, led by Alex Steed, manages to entertain whilst unpacking the overarching paternal tones of some of the best-loved movies in the world. It's a fascinating perspective and benefits from the hosts' clear love for the medium, too.
