Icons, Rebels, Geniuses: Podcasts About Cultural Legends
These podcast episodes, along with their descriptions, were curated and written by our curators, Emmanuel Dzotsi and Kai Wright.
1) Big Lives

Richard Pryor: The Truth‑Teller Who Changed Comedy Forever
Richard Pryor redefined comedy by telling the truth, even when it scorched him. In this raw, riveting episode, BBC archival tape is used to explore how Pryor rose from a Peoria brothel to become comedy’s GOAT, only to wrestle with racism, fame, desire, and self‑destruction.
This is the story of a man who changed culture by refusing to lie — even to save himself.
2) Radiolab

In June of 2020, as Black Lives Matter protests happen outside her front door, Tracie Hunte finds herself examining a very particular moment in Nina Simone's life.
It's a beautiful meditation on Nina Simone, and what it means to make art that speaks to the times you're living through. It's been almost six years since it first aired and it's still so relevant.
3) Song Exploder

You probably know the song “Closing Time” by the Semisonic as the song played at the end of the night when the lights come on at the bar. However, in this episode of Song Exploder, Dan Wilson, the lead singer and songwriter of Semisonic breaks down the surprising behind.
I heard this episode and found out its true meaning, something that Hrishikesh Hirway gets out of artists so well.
4) Making Oprah

Journalist and radio host Jenn White, tells the story of how Oprah came to be...well...Oprah!
In this episode, there’s a standout moment where Oprah recalls flying into Chicago for a pivotal job interview, full of hope for what might come next. It’s both inspiring and revealing, capturing her intense drive and ambition. The episode paints a nuanced, complex portrait of someone who’s had an outsized impact on culture.
5) Death, Sex & Money

Way back in 2014, smart people were creating a whole new form of media: podcasting. That year I encountered one of the first podcast episodes that really got under my skin: Anna Sale’s conversation with Bill Withers, talking about what it means to be a man.
I was immediately hooked on the format — on the intimacy we can achieve with a mic and two voices.

There are people who have changed the world with their art. Whether it be through music, film, or fashion, these icons have acted as inspiration to many and shaped the cultural landscape for future artists.
But how much do we really know about these legends? Their lives, their relationships, and the creative processes behind their work? These shows answer these questions to reveal new perspectives of our favourite cultural icons.

Podcast news from Podnews
The Podcast Show London has announced Global and iHeartPodcasts as headline partners for the event next month. This year, Global’s presence will place a particular focus on Global Studios.
For podcasts, YouTube has pulled far ahead of Spotify, with Apple Podcasts in fourth place behind Amazon Music, according to new global data from MIDiA. 62% of monthly active podcast users are using YouTube, compared to 47% for Spotify and around 25% for Apple Podcasts. The only surveyed countries that Spotify appears to lead in are Australia (but only very slightly), and in Spotify’s home country of Sweden, where it has a significant lead. The data also suggests that 36% of global consumers have no interest in podcasts at all.
Double Elvis’s Disgraceland and Hollywoodland are moving to Exactly Right Media and iHeartPodcasts. It marks a return to iHeart for Disgraceland, after an exclusive period with Amazon Music, and time with Audacy.
