Note from Arielle, EarBuds founder

Hello! I’ve been reflecting on this newsletter — how to keep it sustainable and meaningful in the world of listening. I love writing it. Since launching in 2017, I haven’t missed a week. One thing I’ve realized, though: while the rotating curators and themes make EarBuds unique, that variety may also be holding back growth.

EarBuds isn’t changing.

What’s new is that I’m launching spin-offs by topic. First up: EarBuds History, a weekly roundup of history podcasts. Same deal: you curate, I publish. I’ll test others (true crime, business, comedy, etc.) and see what sticks. You can receive any (or all) you like.

TL;DR:

  • EarBuds stays the same. (If you love it and want to support, you may).

  • New: EarBuds History.

  • More themed newsletters to come.

  • Listening is the best.

With that, let’s meet Tara Jabbari and find out what she recommends⬇️

Podcast Picks Curated by Tara Jabbari

You’re never too old to learn something, and podcasts offer a unique blend of storytelling and education that makes complex past events accessible and engaging.

When the topic is nuanced, it allows for a richer understanding, where a host can focus on it in multiple episodes or a whole season. This list of podcasts features episodes on certain histories that intrigued, and intellectually stimulated the hosts. So, they shared their findings with their audiences!

Love paranormal stories, history, or the American South?

This podcast combines all of that with expert immersive audio, and you can really get into the story. Learn about the legends, curses, and tales, and appreciate the deep research.

Who Was She? podcast cover art

They say men write history, but women live it. After years of hearing about women within the Baha’i Faith, I decided to delve into their lives and highlight their accomplishments.

Each season focuses on one woman: from Polish linguist Lidia Zamenhof, to Persian soldier Zaynab, to the artistic talents of Hazel Scott and Carole Lombard — learn about them on my show.

Dark History podcast cover art

After her successful virtual show, Murder, Mystery & Makeup, Bailey Sarian decided to try her hand at podcasting, to learn and share about the history of pretty much anything.

From dictators to corporations, she delves deep into their untold stories. One of my favorite episodes is the “Dark History of Sugar”, which explains how and why the addictive ingredient got into almost everything.

Redacted History podcast cover art

In school, we are taught a part of history, but with this podcast, we learn the other parts — the redacted ones.

Andre White covers a wide range of topics, from wars to presidencies to what really happened during the first Thanksgiving. It’s a chance to hear the same historic events we learned in school from multiple points.

You Must Remember This podcast cover art

One of the original historical niche podcasts, and what I modeled my podcast, Who was she? after — it concentrates on the first century of Hollywood.

For any film nerd and aficionado, or history buff, Karina Longworth shares intimate details of the silver screen you’ll love to explore.

You can curate a list for us! Learn more about that here.

Tickled (2016)

David Farrier is a New Zealand-based journalist with an eye for the unusual. When he uncovers a series of strange “competitive tickling” videos online, he is determined to learn more about the creators.

Maybe it isn’t considered history yet, but this brilliant documentary is certainly niche.

Podcast news from Podnews

What Your Therapist Thinks podcast cover art

A mental health show where actual licensed therapists open up about what they’re really thinking, while answering the internet’s most burning mental health questions… and by burning mental health questions, we mean the stuff you’re posting about anonymously on Reddit in the middle of the night. These therapists aren’t holding back. They’re telling you what they really think including the things they’d never actually say in session.

Each week, you’ll hear from expert therapists to break it all down: from emotional numbness and trauma, to self-worth and healing.

How 433 Investors Unlocked 400X Return Potential

Institutional investors back startups to unlock outsized returns. Regular investors have to wait. But not anymore. Thanks to regulatory updates, some companies are doing things differently.

Take Revolut. In 2016, 433 regular people invested an average of $2,730. Today? They got a 400X buyout offer from the company, as Revolut’s valuation increased 89,900% in the same timeframe.

Founded by a former Zillow exec, Pacaso’s co-ownership tech reshapes the $1.3T vacation home market. They’ve earned $110M+ in gross profit to date, including 41% YoY growth in 2024 alone. They even reserved the Nasdaq ticker PCSO.

The same institutional investors behind Uber, Venmo, and eBay backed Pacaso. And you can join them. But not for long. Pacaso’s investment opportunity ends September 18.

Paid advertisement for Pacaso’s Regulation A offering. Read the offering circular at invest.pacaso.com. Reserving a ticker symbol is not a guarantee that the company will go public. Listing on the NASDAQ is subject to approvals.
